Almost Home

Yesterday evening I was on my way home from Milford. I always take US-23 to I-69 to exit 123 Lennon. I take M-13 to M-21 which is east/west and I drive directly west for about 10 miles into Owosso where I live.

As soon as I turn onto M-21 west the sky opens up because it’s all farm fields and there is nothing to block the sky view. The sun is below the horizon ahead of me and the sky colors are amazing pinks and purples against turquoise blue. A mist is settling over the farm fields for as far as I can see right or left. The sky is livid as the ground darkens.

I saw a flock of geese landing in a field in that V formation doing their best to slow it down, sort of back peddling their wings for a soft landing. They are almost hovering for seconds as they end a long flight together probably to rest for the night. Well done geese!

It’s all so fleeting. I hope I have captured it here. Someone asked me recently if I liked living so far out “there”. I said that once I make that turn onto M-21, I am home.
